What you need to know about health insurance
Health insurance has turned into an expensive commodity with the constant rise of medical costs. Therefore, regular consumers must educate themselves better to be able to make an educated choice when selecting their insurance. Health insurance can be roughly divided into two categories: reimbursement programs and managed health care.
Reimbursement plans are also known as indemnity plans. They involve the insurance company paying partially, completely, or up to a specific amount per day for your medical expenses. You have the freedom to choose your own hospital, doctor or other health care provider.
Managed care plans are connected with much broader coverage. The insurance company has already prearranged a special agreement with a network of specialists. Therefore, you are either obliged or financially encourage to use only their services. If you decide to go outside the network you will have to bear much higher costs for your treatment. Some of the different types of managed health plans are: health maintenance organizations, preferred provider organizations, and point of service plans.
You should look for a comprehensive health plan that covers hospital, surgical, physician and lab coverage expenses. The hospital expense is about the covering the costs of the room, boarding, and related services while you are in the hospital. Surgical expenses are connected with the surgeon’s fees and all the other costs relating to the procedure or surgery. Physician’s expense is about the fee for the visit to his office or for him visiting you in the hospital. Lab expense covers the costs of getting an x-ray and other diagnostic procedures.
You should research whether your chosen health plan covers prescription drugs, preventive care, annual check-ups, maternity care, infant care, dental care, mental health, vision care and chiropractic care. Based on your budget and current heath situation you should decide on a balance that is good enough to deal with your health issues and not too much of a financial burden.
